Part 2:  The First Step
3.  What is the first step?
“And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent** ye, and believe the gospel. ”  Mark 1:15
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  1 John 1:9
“I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.”  Luke 15:7  (For further study see  Psalms 32:5 and Acts 17:30)

4.  What are the signs of true repentance?

a)  Turn from your transgressions:  “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.  Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?”  Ezekiel 18:30-31

b)  Stop the sin for which you repented of:  “But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.”  Acts 26:20
“Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:”  Matthew 3:8

c)  Accept punishment:  “If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;  And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity: ”  Leviticus 26:40-41

d)  Godly sorrow for sins:  “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.  For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.”  2 Corinthians 7:10-11
“Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”  Job 42:6

5.  What happens to our sins once forgiven?
“I (God), even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.  Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.”  Isaiah 43:25-26
“He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”  Micah 7:19  (For further study see Isaiah 38:17, Psalms 25:7 and Jeremiah 31:34)
