Part 2: His Work and How He Works
5. What is the work of the Holy Ghost in us?
a) Counselor-
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26
“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Romans 5:5 (For further study see Isaiah 11:2.)
b) Guide-
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” John 16:13 (For further study see Romans 8:14.)
c) Sanctifier-
“Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification** of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.” 1 Peter 1:2
“And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:11 (For further study see Romans 8:26.)
d) Witness-
“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:” Romans 8:16 (For further study see Hebrews 10:15 and Acts 5:32.)
6. How does the Holy Spirit accomplish this work in us?
a) Convicts us of our sinfulness-
“And when he (the Holy Spirit) is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.” John 16:8-11
b) Teaches us of Jesus who takes away our sin-
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:” Ephesians 1:17 (For further study see Nehemiah 9:20.)
Note: When we behold something of the purity of Christ, the Holy Spirit leads us to desire this purity for ourselves in place of our filthy sinful hearts.
c) Writes His holy law in our hearts-
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.” Ezekiel 36:26-27
“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:” Hebrews 8:10 (For further study see Jeremiah 31:33.)
